Tusk is concerned about the crisis within the rival Law and Justice party

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, speaking in Hlukholazy at the opening of a new bridge, shared his assessment of the rift within the country’s main opposition force—the Law and Justice (PiS) party. The head of government noted that he does not intend to “mourn” his political opponents, but the profound destabilization of the largest opposition party is an alarming sign for Poland’s entire political system.

Tusk admitted that the scale of the conflict had exceeded his expectations, as in recent hours, absurd accusations have been leveled by PiS members themselves against former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, whom they allegedly called a German agent and an agent of Tusk himself. 

The prime minister noted that while this resembles a dark joke, the situation demonstrates yet another round of major political chaos, and politicians who constantly provoke such internal conflicts and disorder are simply dangerous for the country.

The split within the party was the result of a long-standing internal conflict, which escalated after PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński issued an ultimatum. As a result of their refusal to sign an oath of allegiance to the party leadership, more than thirty members of parliament left the opposition party’s ranks, forming a group centered around Morawiecki. This stripped PiS of its status as the largest parliamentary faction, handing the top spot to Donald Tusk’s coalition.
