Hackers Attacked Government Agencies in Berlin — Spiegel

A cyberattack on Berlin’s state network occurred in the German capital. The attack caused serious disruptions in the operations of two Senate departments at once.

According to the Senate Chancellery, a forensic investigation determined that “the federal state’s network had been compromised.”

It is noted that the Senate Department for Urban Development, Construction, and Housing, as well as the Senate Department for Mobility, Transportation, Environment, and Climate Protection, were affected by the cyberattack.

For security reasons, both departments were disconnected from the federal state’s network as early as Friday to prevent further damage.

According to the Senate Chancellery, a crisis task force has been established under the leadership of the State Commissioner for Information Security of the State of Berlin. The State Criminal Police Office, the Berlin Public Prosecutor’s Office, and the Federal Office for Information Security have been involved in the investigation.

According to Senate spokeswoman Christina Richter, both affected departments continue to operate. However, it is currently impossible to contact them by email; they can only be reached by phone.
