A police officer in Brazil has been suspended in connection with a case involving a leak of investigative data

A federal court in the Brazilian city of Marília authorized searches and suspended a Federal Police officer from duty as part of Operation Sinon. According to the Brazilian Federal Police, he is suspected of selling information from sealed criminal cases to individuals who were under investigation, The Rio Times reports.

The operation took place on the morning of August 19, 2026. Agents executed eight search warrants in the states of São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul. No arrests were made as part of the operation.

Brazilian media identified Federal Police delegate José Navas Júnior, who works in Marília, as a person of interest in the case. According to investigators, since 2023, he allegedly conducted targeted searches in internal databases and passed on information from case files to individuals who were under investigation by law enforcement.

The court also barred the official from accessing Federal Police buildings, systems, and technology. The court ordered that assets related to the case be frozen and seized; however, the amount of potential bribes, the value of frozen assets, or the amount of seized funds have not been disclosed.

Investigators believe that the leaks may have aided groups involved in cigarette smuggling, the use of forced labor, money laundering, environmental crimes, and the embezzlement of state funds. The investigation is also examining the role of businesspeople who may have received the data, as well as lawyers suspected of acting as intermediaries in the transfer of funds.

The Federal Police are investigating possible disclosure of official secrets, passive and active corruption, participation in a criminal organization, and obstruction of an organized crime investigation. No formal charges have been filed in the case at this time; the presumption of innocence applies.
