Stephen Walt said Trump has exhausted his options in the war with Iran

Stephen Walt, a professor of international relations at Harvard University, said that US President Donald Trump has, in his view, exhausted his options for action in the war with Iran. In an interview with Al Jazeera English, Walt said that Trump’s unpredictability does not strengthen the US position, as the Iranians have no reason to believe his words.

Assessment of the war with Iran

In Walt’s assessment, the war is in an exhausting stalemate: neither side truly seeks escalation and each expects the other side to break first. He also believes that Trump’s promise to make the United States stronger is not being fulfilled, as a number of his policy decisions are weakening the country.

The Palestinian-Israeli track

On the Palestinian-Israeli track, Walt sees no possibility for a genuine political settlement. He linked this to the fact that neither the Democratic nor the Republican Party in the United States is prepared to exert pressure on Israel. In the context of Israel, the scholar also said that there remains a strong commitment there to the concept of Greater Israel.
