102-year-old Adele buried in Israel after reunion with family
In the Israeli moshav of Nir Etzion, 102-year-old Adele, who concealed her Jewish origin after the Holocaust, was buried. Franny Weissman, the wife of her relative, recounted this in an opinion column in The Jerusalem Post.
Family history
According to Weissman, the great-grandparents of her husband Evyatar and two of his grandmother’s siblings were killed in Auschwitz. Another 10 children in the family survived. Nine of them repatriated to Israel together, while one of the sisters settled in the United States.
According to Weissman’s account, Adele told no one that she was Jewish and later married a non-Jew without revealing her origin to him. Relatives repeatedly tried to restore contact with her, but she did not respond. More than 350 members of this family, spanning four generations, now live in Israel.
Meeting in Florida
Two years ago, Weissman traveled to the United States to recruit girls for an educational program in Israel. During a lecture tour in Florida, she learned that she was five minutes away from Adele’s home.

Weissman went to the address and saw a woman who, she said, resembled other family members. She arranged a video call between Adele and her relatives; during the conversation, they spoke Hungarian.
After Adele’s death, an American lawyer informed the family that she had changed her mind about cremation and wanted a Jewish burial. The family arranged for her transport to Israel. The funeral took place in the moshav of Nir Etzion, where Adele was buried in the family plot.
In the same column, the author also recalled the custom of listening to the shofar on Rosh Hashanah. She noted that this year the first day of the holiday falls on Shabbat, when the shofar is not sounded, so it will be heard on Sunday, the second day of Rosh Hashanah.
