More than 40 espionage cases have been opened in Poland since the beginning of the year
In Poland, at least 40 new criminal cases were opened in the first eight months of 2026 under provisions related to espionage and activities on behalf of foreign intelligence services. These figures reflect only the statistics from the country’s central prosecutor’s office.
According to the Polish prosecutor’s office, 67 criminal cases were initiated in 2025 under Article 130 of the Polish Criminal Code, which pertains to espionage and activities on behalf of foreign intelligence services.
Current trends indicate that by the end of 2026, the number of such cases may be close to last year’s figure.
“A simple extrapolation shows that, given the current trend, 2026 could see about 60 new cases—in other words, the pace of recruitment and preparation of sabotage operations is not slowing down, but remains consistently high even despite public arrests and the intensification of counterintelligence measures,” the article states.
A significant portion of the criminal cases involves the preparation of sabotage operations, remote recruitment, and the gathering of information about military facilities.
At the same time, the Polish prosecutor’s office emphasizes that the published statistics cover only the most complex cases, which are being investigated by the Polish National Prosecutor’s Office.
Therefore, taking into account the cases being handled by district prosecutor’s offices, the actual scale of activities related to Russian intelligence may be significantly larger.
