In Britain, a legal challenge has been filed against the permit to build a new Chinese embassy

The Royal Mint Residents’ Association has filed a lawsuit in the High Court of London, challenging the British government’s decision to allow China to build a large embassy on this site.

The plaintiffs argue that, in making its decision, the government failed to consider the potential impact of the new diplomatic complex on protests, as well as the risks of persecution of Chinese dissidents.

In court documents, the association emphasizes that ministers should have prevented the use of this site as a potential base for so-called transnational repression.

This refers to China’s plans to build a new embassy on the site of the historic Royal Mint, located near the Tower of London. The British government approved this project in January, shortly before Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit to China—the first visit by a British head of government to the country since 2018.

According to Reuters, the decision was explained as an effort to improve relations with Beijing, despite concerns from British and American politicians who believe the new embassy could be used for espionage.

This was reported by Reuters.

As a reminder, China has begun establishing contacts with representatives of Russia’s political and administrative elite who may shape the country’s future after Vladimir Putin’s rule ends. Beijing is gradually expanding its influence in Russia, which, due to its confrontation with the West, is becoming increasingly dependent on China.
