The UK has condemned the riots in Belfast as racist

The British government has strongly condemned the anti-immigration protests that took place over two days in Belfast and other parts of Northern Ireland. Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Hilary Benn called the riots an act of racist hooliganism and condemned the violence that accompanied the protests.

The official expressed concern over the protests that swept Northern Ireland following a knife attack and highlighted the racist nature of the riots.

When asked on Sky News whether the scenes of violence constituted racist riots rather than protests, Benn replied: “If you are targeting people based on the color of their skin, how else can you describe it? It is racist hooliganism.”

The Secretary of State said the violence had caused deep trauma in the province.

“We have received reports that people are being stopped in their cars on their way to work to be asked about their nationality, and that is absolutely unacceptable,” he said.

The official also criticized the stoking of tensions on social media, stating that “people who live very far from Northern Ireland are posting all sorts of things.” According to him, such incitement could be illegal.

His comments came amid unrest that continued for a second night in a row in Northern Ireland. Clashes erupted between law enforcement and protesters outraged by a knife attack that occurred earlier in the week. Many protesters at the Sandinowes roundabout (eight miles from Belfast) were dressed in dark clothing and face masks, and reportedly planned to attack a hotel housing migrants.

This was reported on Sky News.
