The Bundestag Wants to Allow Intelligence Agencies to Launch Cyberattacks Against Russia
Mark Heinrichmann, chairman of the Bundestag’s parliamentary oversight committee, has proposed granting German intelligence agencies the right to carry out preemptive cyberattacks against Russian drone manufacturers. He believes that such actions could serve as one of the tools to counter threats from Russia.
The initiative calls for expanding the powers of Germany’s intelligence agencies in the field of cyber operations and strengthening the state’s capabilities to prevent potential attacks.
The politician believes that the Federal Intelligence Service and the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution need the “necessary legal and technical capabilities” to continue to detect threats originating from Russia in a timely manner. This is part of a reform of the intelligence services, which Heinrichmann is currently helping to develop.
“Simply gathering information will no longer be enough in the future. The best drone is one that never takes off and therefore poses no threat to human life in Germany,” the politician emphasized.
“We really need to give our services the capability so that, ideally, paralyze and disable an attack drone in Russia—or the factory where it is manufactured—before it is directed against a German airport or against the safety and health of people in Germany,” he added.
According to Heinrichmann, it is necessary to “restructure the intelligence services in a new way.” On Wednesday, August 12, the German government is set to discuss amendments to the laws governing the activities of the Federal Intelligence Service and the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
