Unauthorized access to data of 8.8 million people obtained in Denmark — Anadolu Agency

In Denmark, unauthorized individuals gained access to the names, addresses and personal identification numbers of about 8.8 million people through the Central Population Register (CPR). This was reported by Anadolu Agency, citing Danish broadcaster DR.

Access through a company

Denmark’s Ministry of Research, Education and Digitalisation described the incident as extremely serious. The ministry said authorities are determining the full scale of the incident.

According to the ministry, unauthorized access was obtained by abusing a Danish company’s legitimate right to conduct searches in the CPR system. The company’s access to the register has already been suspended, and the Danish Data Protection Agency has been informed of the incident.

Protected data

The ministry clarified that the access did not include the names and addresses of people who had registered name and address protection. Minister for Research, Education and Digitalisation Christina Egelund urged citizens to remain vigilant and not disclose passwords or other confidential information in response to phone calls, emails or other requests — even if the person contacting them knows their name, address or CPR number.

The CPR system contains data on approximately 11 million registered individuals, including deceased people and Danish citizens who have moved abroad.
