Riyadh discusses boosting readiness of Yemeni forces — Anadolu Agency

In Saudi Arabia, the commander of the Saudi-led coalition’s Joint Forces, Lieutenant General Fahd bin Hamad Al-Salman, met in Riyadh with Tareq Saleh, a member of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council. They discussed strengthening coordination and increasing the readiness of Yemeni forces on various fronts.

The meeting took place at the Joint Forces Command headquarters in Riyadh. Saleh is also the commander of Yemen’s National Resistance Forces. Anadolu Agency reports this, citing a coalition statement.

Coordination of forces

The parties reviewed developments in Yemen and discussed coordinating efforts to maintain the readiness of Yemeni troops “on all fronts and in all directions” in order to restore the state and its institutions.

Al-Salman noted Saleh’s role in the Presidential Leadership Council and his leadership of the National Resistance Forces, as well as the sacrifices suffered by the personnel of these forces. Saleh thanked the Joint Forces Command for supporting Yemeni military personnel and the National Resistance Forces in strengthening their capabilities.

He also welcomed efforts to unite the forces and prepare military units to carry out their tasks. Both sides stressed the importance of unity, coordination, the training of units, and increasing their combat readiness.

Fighting in Yemen

The talks took place amid renewed fighting between Yemeni government forces and the Houthis on several fronts. The armed conflict in Yemen has continued since 2014, when the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, and several provinces. In 2015, the Saudi-led coalition intervened in support of the internationally recognized government.

According to Anadolu Agency, the new fighting began in July after the group announced a naval blockade of Riyadh. The Houthis recently said they had advanced along the Red Sea coast and in the area of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The report also states that they attacked Saudi Arabia’s oil infrastructure.
