In Pyhtää, in southeastern Finland, a man born in 1973 has been charged with the attempted murder of his son, who is under the age of 10. Charges in the case were brought on Monday at the Helsinki District Court.

Case circumstances

According to YLE News, the alleged attempt occurred on June 21–22, during Midsummer celebrations, near the Savukoski museum bridge in Pyhtää, in the Kymenlaakso region. The father and son were alone on a weekend trip.

According to the source, the man stopped the situation himself and called the emergency response center. Police detained him at the scene. The boy was in hospital, and law enforcement officers also questioned him.

Detention

Previously, the Helsinki District Court remanded the man in custody on probable cause on suspicion of attempted murder. He has been in custody since the summer.

Police did not disclose the man's possible motive or the method by which the attempt may have been carried out. In July, the head of the investigation, Helsinki Police Criminal Commissioner Tuomas Lindholm, said that investigators already had a preliminary understanding of the motive.
