A Swedish man who illegally crossed the border into Russia has been detained in Finland — Yle
Near the eastern Finnish town of Lieksa, law enforcement officers detained a 40-year-old Swedish citizen who had illegally crossed the state border and ended up on Russian territory.
This was reported by Yle.
The man himself called emergency services for help, reporting that he had lost his bearings.
The incident began on Tuesday morning when, around 6 a.m., the foreign national called the emergency hotline. In a state of despair, he explained to dispatchers that he had inadvertently ended up on the other side of the border during his walk.
Significant resources were mobilized to search for the missing man, including a specialized helicopter from the Finnish Border Guard.
Since the man was on the territory of a neighboring country, the Finnish side quickly established contact with the Russian border service to coordinate efforts.
The Swede’s whereabouts were not determined until late in the evening, at 10:51 p.m., in the vicinity of the town of Kuikkasuo. By the time he was located, the traveler had already returned to Finnish territory, where he was immediately detained by authorities.
The man is currently in custody and has been charged with violating the state border. The Border Guard has launched a preliminary investigation to determine all the details and the actual reasons for the illegal border crossing.
“The Border Commissioner of North Karelia has contacted a colleague in Russia,” official sources report regarding the process of resolving the incident at the international level.
Finland demands that Ukrainian drones never enter its territory
On April 12, in the southeastern Finnish town of Iihti, a drone carrying unexploded ordnance was discovered. After setting up a security perimeter in the Perheniemi area, Armed Forces specialists carried out a controlled detonation of the warhead directly in the forest.
Earlier, several unidentified drones violated Finnish airspace and crashed on its territory.
As a reminder, Finland has deported a record number of Russians.
Finland is also making it harder to obtain a permanent residence permit.
On Sunday, two drones, likely belonging to Ukraine, crashed on Finnish territory.
