Yorkutaime community in Ghana receives a borehole with clean water — MyJoyOnline
Residents of the Yorkutaime community in the North Tongu District of Ghana’s Volta Region have gained access to clean and reliable drinking water after a mechanized borehole was commissioned. It was built by Hope for Ghana in partnership with Ingoma Living Waters, MyJoyOnline reports.
Water from a cattle pond
Previously, the community had no stable source of drinking water. Residents were forced to use greenish water from an artificial pond that was originally created for cattle and share it with animals.
During the dry season, the situation became more difficult: some residents had to travel about 10 kilometres by motorcycle to neighbouring communities to collect water.

Mechanized borehole
Senyoh Success Gbormitta and the Hope for Ghana team became aware of the problem during a visit to Yorkutaime in February 2026. Gbormitta became a recipient of the 2026 JoyNews Impact Maker Award in the education and water, sanitation and hygiene category.
According to Gbormitta, residents previously drank greenish water that was also used by cattle. A community representative thanked Hope for Ghana and its partners, noting that the new water source should help protect children from health risks associated with consuming contaminated water.
The new borehole is expected to provide residents with water for drinking and other household needs and reduce their dependence on the pond intended for cattle.
