Callas stated that the EU has no plans to reimpose sanctions against Usmanov and Friedman

The European Union has no plans to reimpose sanctions against Russian oligarchs Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Friedman in the near future. This was stated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.

“I don’t see that happening with regard to these two individuals in the near future,” Kallas said, responding to a question about the possibility of Friedman and Usmanov being placed back on the European sanctions list.

She noted that the EU is currently working on approximately 1,600 new additions to the sanctions lists. “I want to emphasize once again: in light of the decisions adopted two weeks ago, 2,998 entries on the sanctions lists will remain in effect for three years. In other words, we no longer have to decide whether to extend them every six months,” she said.

Kallas emphasized that EU member states “are free to propose names that, in their opinion, should be included on the sanctions list,” and that ultimately, the decisions are made by the member states.
