School in Kenyasi, Ghana, renovated for $600,000
In Kenyasi, in Ghana’s Ahafo Region, the Kenyasi No. 1 Anglican Junior High School has been renovated following a $600,000 investment from Underground Mining Alliance (UMA). According to MyJoyOnline, the funds were provided by the company, which is a service provider for the Newmont Ahafo South mine, as part of its corporate social responsibility program.
Unsafe learning conditions
Before the renovation, students and teachers had studied for years in a building with a weak roof, cracks in the walls, damaged window frames and numerous potholes in the floor. School principal Opoku Agyemang said the risk of structural collapse was so significant that teachers conducted classes while fearing for their physical safety. According to him, this negatively affected the learning process.
During the official opening of the renovated facility on September 9, 2026, in Kenyasi, Agyemang thanked UMA for its support. He noted that the renovated building should provide safer and more comfortable conditions for students and school staff.

Support for education in the district
UMA-Subika’s human resources supervisor and CSR team leader, Bertha Yeboah, said the company decided to fund the school’s restoration in order to create a safer and more conducive environment for learning and teaching for the Kenyasi No. 1 community.
Asutifi North District Education Director Naomi Asantewaa thanked UMA for its educational initiatives in the district. She noted that funding for the project reduced the financial burden on the district assembly and urged the community to take care of the infrastructure handed over to it. According to her, the education directorate will strengthen oversight of the learning process so that improved conditions are accompanied by better academic results.
Among UMA-Subika’s other initiatives in the district, the source names scholarships and apprenticeship programs for the community, annual reading festival competitions, infrastructure support and the provision of learning materials.
