The fire broke out in the middle of the night near a high-rise building in one of Helsinki’s residential neighborhoods. Seven cars were parked under a canopy in the parking lot; by the time the fire department arrived, all of them were engulfed in flames. Several other nearby cars were damaged by the intense heat from the fire.
According to local residents, they were awakened by the roar of the fire and began waking their neighbors. People feared that the flames would reach the building itself. Owners of undamaged cars rushed outside to move them further away from the fire.
One person is reported to have been affected by toxic smoke.
The fire and rescue service says the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and the police have launched an investigation.
