Tunnel at least 25 meters deep found in Qalqilya — Jerusalem Post

In Israel, in Qalqilya in the West Bank, police said they had discovered a tunnel that was still being dug at the time of the operation. According to law enforcement estimates, it was at least 25 meters deep. Four suspects were detained during the operation, The Jerusalem Post reports.

Weapons and equipment

The tunnel was discovered on Wednesday by officers from the Samaria District crime-fighting unit and the Israel Border Police during a targeted intelligence-based operation. Police searched a location in Qalqilya identified by intelligence, where they also found another excavation that had been started nearby.

During the search, security forces seized an M16 rifle, a sniper rifle, ammunition and magazines. In addition, phones, a DVR device and fertilizer were found at the site. According to police, the fertilizer could have been used to prepare explosive devices. All four detainees were taken in for questioning.

Reaction of local authorities

Police said they would continue operations to detect underground infrastructure and weapons in the Samaria area, as well as search for those involved. Kfar Saba Mayor Rafi Saar called the incident serious and said it demonstrated the danger to residents of the region.

Oshrat Gani Gonen, head of the Drom HaSharon Regional Council, said the tunnel near Qalqilya could not be ignored. She also mentioned weapons, drones and infrastructure that she described as terrorist, and called for stronger security in communities near the separation line.
