NDIS support programs to close in Canberra — ABC News Australia
In Canberra, Australia, the organization Carers ACT will close the Hub Disability Day Program and support coordination services under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in early October. The organization explained the decision by rising operating costs, financial pressure, and changes to funding mechanisms.
As ABC News Australia reports, Carers ACT said that operating these services increasingly required subsidies from the organization itself, and that continuing this practice was financially impossible. The Hub program helped participants develop independent living skills and take part in everyday activities, including housework, music, and social activities.
Participants’ concerns
Advocate and NDIS participant Benjamin Zarev said he attended the Carers ACT day program to improve his mental well-being and leave home more often. He expressed concern for people for whom it is important to maintain a stable routine because of disability.

Shannon Kolak, chief executive of ACT Down Syndrome and Intellectual Disability, called the closure devastating for the disability community. According to her, some participants had attended the center five days a week for many years. She also noted that it is difficult to find good support coordinators.
Changes in the NDIS system
The federal NDIS reform bill has already been passed following an agreement between the Labor Party and the Coalition. According to ABC, the reform is expected to result in many people losing access to the system or being unable to join it; instead, they are planned to be transferred to state and territory support programs that have yet to be created. The changes are expected to save 37.8 billion Australian dollars over four years.
NDIS participants, their advocates, and sector representatives criticize provisions that could reduce budgets for social and community participation by up to 50%. Such funding covers, among other things, support worker services for trips to a doctor or a store. Laura Nuttall, a Greens member of the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly, said Canberra residents fear further cuts and do not know what support mechanisms will be available in the future.
