Flights have been restricted in Catania due to renewed ash emissions from Mount Etna

Renewed volcanic ash emissions from Etna have once again led to partial restrictions on air traffic at Catania International Airport in Sicily.

According to the airport operator, part of the airspace has been closed due to the ash emissions, leading to restrictions on the number of planes that can land.

Until 2:00 p.m. local time in Catania, no more than five planes per hour are allowed to land.

At the same time, there are no restrictions on departures.

Airport officials noted that they will monitor the situation throughout the day and provide updates on any further changes. Passengers were advised to check the status of their flights directly with their airlines.

The situation at Catania Airport had only returned to normal last weekend, after air traffic had been significantly disrupted for over a week.

Following the eruption, Mount Etna repeatedly spewed volcanic ash, posing serious risks to aviation. As a result, flights were canceled or rerouted to other airports.

Mount Etna is one of Europe’s most active volcanoes, and its eruptions regularly affect aviation operations in eastern Sicily.

This was reported by dpa.

Prior to this, Catania Airport in Sicily had once again suspended arrivals and departures due to a cloud of volcanic ash from Etna.

The airport in Sicily has been closed for over a week due to the activity of Mount Etna. The eruption caused disruptions in air traffic and significantly affected the airport’s operations.
