In Australia, a teenager was sentenced to 8.5 years for an assault and a fatal traffic accident
In Australia, a minor was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison for a brutal assault on a man and a fatal car accident in a Melbourne suburb. Judge Amanda Chambers called his actions “truly shocking,” according to ABC News Australia.
On February 6, 2025, when the teenager was 16 years old, he attacked 36-year-old Valentino Aropa near an apartment building in Flemington. According to court records, the teenager struck the man on the back of the head from behind, and while the man was lying on the ground, he kicked and stomped on him. The judge described the attack as cowardly and inhumane.
Aropa spent eight months in the hospital. He suffered a severe, irreversible brain injury and physical impairments; he now needs a walker and can no longer communicate with or spend time with his children as he would like.

Three months after the attack, Juvenile Court placed the teenager on probation for unrelated cases involving car theft and aggravated burglary. Nine days later, while under the influence of alcohol, got behind the wheel of a stolen SUV, ran a red light, and crashed at the intersection of Doghertys and Derrimuth Roads in Tarnay.
As a result of the crash, a 16-year-old passenger, Kevin Olenaga, a friend of the driver, was killed. The judge also noted that the teenager had suffered a brain injury following another serious accident two years earlier, but that experience did not deter him from dangerous driving.
The teenager pleaded guilty at an early stage, specifically to intentionally causing serious injury and reckless driving resulting in death. He will be eligible to apply for parole after serving at least four and a half years. Taking into account the time already served, his sentence expires in March 2034.
