The Kremlin has launched Operation Matryoshka: Russia is targeting the French elections
The Paris Prosecutor’s Office is investigating a possible Russian disinformation campaign targeting potential candidates in the 2027 French presidential election.
False reports about the serious illnesses of former Prime Ministers Gabriel Attal and Édouard Philippe were spread on social media and fake websites.
Fake videos targeting Attal were created using the logos and styling of French media outlets. They claimed that the politician had allegedly been hospitalized and was suffering from Parkinson’s disease. Attal filed a complaint, calling the attack foreign interference.
Fake news was spread about Philippe, alleging he had dementia, which supposedly would prevent him from participating in the presidential race. His inner circle denied these reports.
Experts from AntiBot4Navalny stated that they had uncovered an influence and disinformation operation called “Matryoshka,” which is linked to Russian networks.
French law enforcement agencies are investigating a possible link between the campaign and preparations for the 2027 presidential election.
