Ghana reports dispute over Free SHS and school funding — MyJoyOnline
In Ghana, Yaw Opoku Mensah, spokesperson for former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, reported a dispute between the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service over the implementation of the Free SHS free senior high school programme. According to him, the disagreements concern the number of approximately 60,000 students enrolled in schools.
As MyJoyOnline reports, Opoku Mensah claims that the dispute is delaying the transfer of funds to schools and creating financial difficulties for their administrations. He also said that the government had not allocated funds to schools for the needs of second-year students, forcing some institutions to allegedly operate on credit.

Claims about school supplies
According to the spokesperson, some schools no longer provide free of charge some of the items that students previously received for free, including school uniforms and other items. He called the sale of such goods to students a “silent protest” by school administrations over the claimed funding problems.
Warning over school operations
Opoku Mensah also said that heads of some schools had allegedly been threatened with dismissal if they made public comments about the situation. In his view, if the dispute between the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service is not resolved, it could jeopardize the continued operation of some schools.
