China opens global World Cleanup Day observance for the first time — ECNS
In Shaoxing, in east China's Zhejiang Province, the global observance of World Cleanup Day 2026 was opened on September 20. China is hosting the event for the first time, ECNS reports.
Theme and organizers
The event's theme is formulated as “From Clean Plates to Clean Cities.” The event was jointly organized by China's Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), and the People's Government of Zhejiang Province.

About 800 representatives of government bodies, cities, international organizations, academia and business attended the event. The program includes exhibitions, forums and field visits.
World Cleanup Day
In 2023, the UN General Assembly designated September 20 as World Cleanup Day, which is observed annually. The day was established to raise awareness of the role of cleanup efforts in advancing sustainable development.
