Typhoon Dujuan kills four people in Japan — Taipei Times

In Japan, Typhoon Dujuan has killed at least four people, while another 22 were injured. Heavy rains caused by the storm triggered flooding and landslides near Tokyo.

Deaths and missing people

Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported that three people died in Chiba Prefecture and one more person died in the Kanagawa region. Search operations continued for six people who went missing after landslides caused by torrential rain.

As Taipei Times reports, by morning the typhoon had moved away from Japan’s coast into the Pacific Ocean. After that, authorities canceled or lowered the level of most warnings for heavy rainfall and landslides.

Record rainfall near Tokyo

As of the afternoon, more than 45,000 households in Chiba Prefecture remained without electricity. More than 460 homes were damaged. Although Dujuan was weakening as it moved northeast, it brought record amounts of rainfall to parts of the Tokyo area.

On Oshima Island, located about 120 kilometers south of central Tokyo, 832 millimeters of rain fell over 48 hours — more than twice the average rainfall for the whole of September. In Tokyo’s Edogawa area, a record 282.5 millimeters of rain was recorded in 24 hours. Due to the severe weather, one of the world’s largest video game exhibitions in the capital also closed early.
