Nigeria’s Vice President Shettima arrives in New York for UN General Assembly — Premium Times Nigeria
Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New York, United States, to represent President Bola Tinubu and lead the Nigerian delegation at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. As Premium Times Nigeria reports, the country’s participation in UN events will be guided by national interests, commitment to multilateral cooperation and a call for reform of international institutions.
Nigeria’s position
Shettima said that Nigeria supports multilateralism, but international institutions must, in his view, become more representative, equitable and aligned with modern economic and demographic realities. He also said that the Nigerian delegation would defend the country’s interests in contacts with partners and promote President Tinubu’s call to strengthen the voice of developing countries in the global system.
During the general debate, the vice president is to deliver Nigeria’s national statement. It will address the country’s position on key international issues and priorities in the areas of peace and security, development, economic growth and global cooperation.

Delegation and meetings
Shettima arrived in New York together with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning Doris Uzoka-Anite, and other officials. Upon arrival, he was received by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Chief of Staff to the President in the Office of the Vice President Ibrahim Hadejia, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of Women Affairs Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alake, and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN Jimoh Ibrahim.
On the sidelines of the General Assembly, the vice president plans to hold bilateral meetings with world leaders, international organizations and development partners. Nigeria is expected to use these contacts to strengthen its positions on reforming the international financial architecture, sustainable development, climate finance, access to technology and broader African representation in global decision-making.
