A former lawmaker was detained in Crimea following the death of a 12-year-old girl
In the temporarily occupied Crimea, a court remanded 64-year-old Valentin Baida—a former “United Russia” deputy in the Dzhankoy District—into custody. The body of a 12-year-old schoolgirl, who had gone missing the day before, was found in the yard of his house in the village of Chaikine.
According to Russian law enforcement officials, on August 7, the girl left home on her bicycle and did not return. After her father reported her missing, police identified the house where she might be within an hour.
According to the preliminary version of the investigation, Baida gave the child a household gas canister; after inhaling its contents, she lost consciousness and died. According to the investigation, the man carried the body to the backyard and began digging a hole, but did not have time to finish before the police arrived.
Forensic examinations have now been ordered to determine the exact cause of the girl’s death. Baida denies the investigators’ version of events and claims that the schoolgirl came to him on her own and asked him to buy a gas canister.
