Latvia has banned the broadcast of the Belarusian radio station — Delfi

In Latvia, the National Electronic Media Council (NEPLP) has banned the Belarusian radio station “Radio Belarus” from broadcasting within the country.

According to the statement, the NEPLP received information from another competent state agency indicating that “Radio Belarus” generally disseminates one-sided and biased information about Russia’s war against Ukraine, justifies Russian military aggression in Ukraine, and publishes content supporting the political regime of Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko.

The Council also notes that the radio station is under the direct control of the Belarusian State Television and Radio Company. This organization is included on the EU sanctions list for supporting the Belarusian regime and its involvement in Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

The restrictions on the radio station’s broadcasts will remain in effect as long as the organization remains on the sanctions list.

The NEPLP explained that although “Radio Belarus” is not under Latvian jurisdiction, EU sanctions apply to it. Therefore, the council is obligated to restrict the broadcast of this program within the country.

The decision applies to all forms of distribution, including via the internet.

The NEPLP blocked access to the Belarusian radio station’s website, radiobelarus.by, earlier this month.
