The Netherlands Honored the Memory of the Victims of the MH17 Crash
On July 17, a ceremony was held in the Netherlands to honor the memory of the 298 victims of the MH17 crash, which was shot down by Russia over the Donetsk region in 2014. The event was attended by Ukraine’s Ambassador to the Netherlands Andriy Kostin, Australia’s Ambassador Greg French, and relatives of the victims.
The wreath-laying ceremony took place at the memorial complex near Schiphol Airport. Participants observed a moment of silence to honor the victims.
During the ceremony, the Ukrainian ambassador laid a bouquet of sunflowers at the memorial. These flowers hold special symbolic significance, as Flight MH17 was shot down over a sunflower field in the Donetsk region, and sunflowers grown from seeds collected at the site of the tragedy now bloom near the memorial.
According to Andriy Kostin, the downing of Flight MH17 was one of the most tragic consequences of Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine. He thanked the Netherlands for its principled stance and consistent efforts to ensure justice and hold those responsible accountable.
Relatives of the victims emphasized that the MH17 tragedy is inextricably linked to Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine. Pete Plug, a board member of the “Air Crash” Foundation, stated that responsibility for the downing of the plane lies not only with the Kremlin leadership but also with the entire Russian state apparatus.
Another representative of the foundation, Anton Kotte, who lost his son, daughter-in-law, and grandson in the crash, expressed hope that international judicial mechanisms will ultimately ensure that Russia is held accountable.
“We are awaiting further consideration of the case at the European Court of Human Rights. The Dutch government is working on its response in the inter-state case. As early as September, we will discuss the next steps with representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” Kotte said.
This was reported by Ukrinform.
As a reminder, Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen summoned the Russian ambassador following reports of cyberattacks on private surveillance cameras. According to authorities, the breach could have been used to track the routes of military aid deliveries to Ukraine.
The United Kingdom and the Netherlands are launching a large-scale maritime project.
