In Nigeria, 159 boys sleep in a one-room dormitory — principal
In Nigeria’s Nasarawa State, 159 boys from the Gudindi, Sabon Gida boarding school for nomadic communities sleep in one dormitory room. This was stated by the institution’s principal, Isah Turajo. According to him, the pupils sleep on the floor and use about 100 mattresses.
Overcrowded dormitory
As Premium Times Nigeria reports, the school is located in the Kokona Local Government Area. Turajo said that due to a lack of space, the administration converted the school’s only hall into a one-room dormitory for boys.
There are 229 children studying at the institution in total: 159 boys and 70 girls. Of the 70 female pupils, 34 stay overnight in staff housing together with female school employees. Another 36 girls attend school during the day and live in neighboring communities.

Appeal for help
According to the principal, the accommodation situation becomes more difficult during periods of intense heat: some pupils carry their mats to classrooms at night to find a more comfortable place to sleep. He noted that the school needs other accommodation for pupils to avoid a possible outbreak of disease.
Turajo also said that about 100 mattresses were donated last year by Governor Abdullahi Sule. The principal appealed to the Nasarawa State authorities, benefactors, private individuals, and other concerned Nigerians to provide the school with dormitories and other necessary facilities.
