In Nigeria, Arambambi sues university over alleged refusal to release Obi’s records
In Nigeria, Labour Party official Abayomi Arabambi has filed a lawsuit against the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and its vice-chancellor over the alleged refusal to provide the academic records of Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi. Premium Times Nigeria reports.
Request for records
Arabambi said he asked the university to provide a certified copy of certificate No. D000198, which, he said, was issued to Obi in 1984 after he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy. He also requested the academic and other official records on the basis of which the degree was awarded and the certificate issued.
According to the applicant, the request letter dated July 16, 2026, was delivered to the university on August 6. He applied under the Freedom of Information Act of 2011, but claims that within the prescribed period he received neither the requested information nor a written notice of refusal citing legal provisions. Arabambi also said he sent a reminder on August 31, which, according to his information, UNN received on September 1.

Claimant’s demands
Arabambi’s lawyer, Anderson Asemota, filed lawsuit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/2144/2026 with the Federal High Court in Abuja on September 9. The claimant asks the court to compel the defendants to consider his application in accordance with the law and provide certified copies of the certificate and related records if those documents are in the university’s possession, custody or control.
The requested materials include records concerning the award of the degree, the registration of the certificate, as well as decisions of the senate or academic body regarding the awarding of the diploma. According to the publication, Arabambi is asking the court for 19 remedies. The case has not yet been assigned to a specific judge. The complaint also centers on the claimant’s allegation of different versions of Obi’s name in documents submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission and educational authorities.
