Nigeria appoints first female professor of mass communication — Premium Times Nigeria

Fountain University in Osogbo, Nigeria, has appointed Rahmat Adeniran as its first female professor of mass communication. The decision was approved on 21 September at the institution's 67th meeting of the governing council.

Adeniran previously taught at Lagos State University and is now dean of the College of Management and Social Sciences at Fountain University. According to the university, the appointment also made her the first female professor at the college, Premium Times Nigeria reports.

Teaching and research experience

Adeniran joined Fountain University in 2023 after 16 years of teaching at Lagos State University. There, she obtained a degree in journalism, a master's degree and a doctoral degree in communication studies.

Her research interests include journalism practice, health and development communication, disinformation, fact-checking, and trust in the media in Nigeria and the wider African media space. In 2020, she took part in the Dubawa Fact-Checking Research Fellowship, which is now called the Kwame Karikari Fact-Checking and OSINT Fellowship.

Other personnel decisions

The university also announced the reappointment of Olayinka Karim as vice-chancellor for a second term. In addition, Mutiyat Ogunrinde was appointed the institution's first female professor of software engineering.

In a statement, Fountain University said Adeniran's appointment is expected to strengthen the academic profile of the discipline and promote teaching, research, mentorship and intellectual development in mass communication.
