Nigeria sets up committee to review Islamic preacher’s statements
Authorities in Sokoto State in northern Nigeria have established a 14-member advisory committee to review disputes arising from statements by Islamic scholars. The decision was made by state Governor Ahmed Aliyu, while his spokesperson, Abubakar Bawa, announced the committee’s formation.
Committee’s tasks
The committee is headed by Yahaya Boyi. He was tasked with assessing the legal and religious aspects of issues related to statements by Musa Lukuva which, according to Premium Times Nigeria, were considered disrespectful of religious beliefs.
Under the committee’s mandate, its members must analyze the Sharia position on the issues raised by Lukuva and provide recommendations to the state government. The report and recommendations must be submitted within 14 days.

The body includes theologians, lawyers, officials, and representatives of Islamic organizations and movements, including Izala, Tijaniyya, Qadiriyya, Jama’atu Nasril Islam, and the Sokoto Sultanate Council. Gandi Umar Muhammad was appointed secretary of the committee.
Attack at mosque
On Friday, Lukuva was stabbed in the neck at his mosque in the Mabera area of Sokoto city. The attack was preceded by several weeks of tension over his public statements. Critics said they contained derogatory or blasphemous claims concerning the parents of Prophet Muhammad.
After the attack, a crowd gathered at the scene, resulting in the attacker’s death. Lukuva was taken to hospital, where he received treatment and was discharged the same day. State authorities closed the mosque and later formed the advisory committee to restore order.
