Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemns attempted attack on Mecca

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on September 16 condemned an attempted attack on Mecca in Saudi Arabia. In a post on X, he said that the Pakistani people were saddened and concerned by this incident.

Drone interception

According to Asharq Al-Awsat, on September 15 Saudi air defense intercepted a drone before it entered the restricted airspace zone of the holy city. The Saudi side said that the drone was launched by the Houthis from Yemen.

Coalition statement

Major General Turki al-Maliki, spokesperson for the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen, called this incident the second attempt to attack Mecca. According to him, the first such attempt occurred on July 27, 2017.

Al-Maliki also said that the coalition’s joint forces command would not hesitate to take the necessary deterrent measures against the Houthis. The report provides no independent confirmation of the circumstances of the drone’s launch.
