German police seize 1.3 tons of illegal fireworks
Police in Oranienburg, Brandenburg, Germany, discovered and seized approximately 1.3 tons of illegal fireworks from a van driven by a 27-year-old man.
This was reported by Spiegel.
The incident occurred after witnesses reported seeing fireworks being loaded into a cargo van. The suspect attempted to flee, but authorities found boxes of fireworks during a search.
The seized fireworks were packed into 70 cardboard boxes, which require a special permit for transport. The driver was unable to provide such a permit. He is now facing criminal charges for violating explosive materials regulations.
Irresponsible use of fireworks has raised concerns in several EU countries, including Belgium, where authorities are considering banning fireworks sales following New Year’s incidents. The investigation will continue to determine the driver’s intentions and the intended use of the fireworks.
