The number of illegal entries into Germany has dropped sharply

In Germany, 24,329 cases of illegal entry without the necessary documents were recorded in the first half of 2026. This is more than 20% fewer than during the same period last year.

In June, the number of such cases stood at 3,290—the lowest figure since 2021 and nearly 42% lower than in June 2025.

The government attributes the decline to tighter border controls. Random checks at all of the country’s land borders have been in effect since September 2024, and since May 2025, authorities have also begun turning back most asylum seekers at the border, with the exception of those in vulnerable categories.
