The U.S. has launched large-scale strikes against Iranian military targets for the second time in two days – Reuters

The United States carried out strikes on more than 90 military targets in Iran in response to a series of attacks by Tehran against shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. In response, Iran announced attacks on U.S. military facilities in Kuwait and Bahrain, signaling a further escalation of the conflict in the Middle East.

According to U.S. Central Command, the latest series of strikes—carried out in response to Tuesday’s attacks on three cargo ships in the Strait of Hormuz—occurred several hours after President Donald Trump stated that, in his view, the temporary ceasefire with Iran “had ended.”

“On the orders of the Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Central Command forces have launched additional strikes against Iran to further degrade its ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,” the Command said in a statement.

According to reports, the U.S. attacked 90 Iranian military targets, including air defense systems, coastal surveillance facilities, missile and drone depots, naval facilities, and military logistics infrastructure. The strikes shook several cities along Iran’s southern coast and left some areas without power.

In response, Tehran attacked Kuwait and Bahrain, where U.S. military bases are located.

Kuwait’s Ministry of Defense stated that it was intercepting missiles and drones, while Qatar briefly declared a state of “heightened security threat” but later lifted it.

Control over the Strait of Hormuz—through which one-fifth of the world’s oil supplies passed before the war—gave Tehran enormous leverage, effectively allowing it to force the world’s most powerful military to make concessions. Although Iran has not claimed responsibility for the attacks on the ships, analysts suggest that the country is using such actions to gain leverage in negotiations, Reuters reports.

The U.S. Treasury Department revoked the general license that had permitted certain transactions involving Iranian oil. Washington made this decision following new Iranian attacks on commercial tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.
