Calls are being made in Germany to renew efforts to ban the "Alternative for Germany" party

Calls are being made in Germany to renew efforts to ban the "Alternative for Germany" party

Georg Mayer, Minister of the Interior of the federal state of Thuringia, has called for the initiation of a new procedure to ban the far-right party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD).

According to him, the time has come for concrete legal steps to initiate the banning of the political party, and further delays, in his view, run counter to the principles of a democratic state.

“In my view, the time has come—now, at the very latest—to take concrete measures to initiate proceedings to ban the party,” Mayer said, emphasizing that dragging out the process is dangerous for democracy.

His statement came after the publication of an expert report by the organization “Society for Civil Liberties” (GFF), which states that a lawsuit to ban the “AdN” before the Federal Constitutional Court has a good chance of success.

According to Mayer, the report provides documented and legally substantiated evidence of possible violations, particularly regarding the principle of human dignity enshrined in Germany’s Basic Law.

DW reports this.

The German far-right party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) has significantly strengthened its lead in public opinion polls, widening its gap with the conservative CDU/CSU bloc led by incumbent Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Germany has denied entry to nearly 18,600 people following the tightening of border controls.
