Germany wraps up campaigns ahead of elections in two states — Deutsche Welle
In Germany, parties are holding their final campaign events ahead of Sunday’s elections in Berlin and the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. These votes are drawing particular attention following the convincing victory of the far-right Alternative for Germany party in the recent elections in Saxony-Anhalt.

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Alternative for Germany and Alliance 90/The Greens are holding major rallies. In Berlin, large-scale events have been planned by Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democratic Union and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance. Other parties concluded their campaigns on Friday.
According to the public broadcaster ZDF’s Politbarometer Extra poll, as of Thursday evening, 21% of voters in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and 23% in Berlin had not decided on their choice. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is expected to see a tight contest between AfD and the Social Democratic Party of Germany, while support for the Greens remains close to the 5% needed to enter the state parliament.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is currently governed by a coalition of the SPD and the Left Party, led by Minister-President Manuela Schwesig. In Berlin, according to polls, the CDU is competing with the Left Party for first place, while the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance may fail to clear the 5% threshold. Berlin’s government is formed by a CDU-SPD coalition led by Mayor Kai Wegner.
The election results could have consequences at the federal level, as Friedrich Merz’s political future has been discussed following the CDU’s defeat by AfD in the Saxony-Anhalt election. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, polls showed CDU support at 6%, Deutsche Welle English reports.
