An outbreak of malaria has occurred at a German airport; one person has died
An outbreak of malaria among employees has been reported at Frankfurt Airport in Germany. At least six employees have been diagnosed with the dangerous infection, and one of them has died. Five other infected individuals are under medical supervision and receiving the necessary treatment. The causes of the malaria outbreak are currently being investigated.
What makes this situation unusual is that the employees who fell ill had not visited countries where malaria is prevalent. Therefore, German experts suspect that the infection may have occurred directly at the airport. The most likely scenario is that a malaria-infected mosquito entered Germany on board an airplane, either in passenger luggage or in the cargo hold.
Such cases are referred to as “airport malaria.” This is an extremely rare occurrence in which a mosquito carrying the malaria parasite from a region where the parasite is endemic travels thousands of kilometers on an airplane and bites a person upon arrival. According to research, such cases are rare in Europe, and most people with malaria are those who became infected while traveling to endemic countries.
Why is malaria dangerous?
Malaria is an infectious disease caused by parasites of the genus Plasmodium. They are transmitted to humans primarily through the bite of an infected female mosquito. At first, the disease may resemble a common infection: the person experiences a high fever, chills, headache, weakness, muscle pain, and other nonspecific symptoms. This is precisely what can make it difficult to diagnose the disease in a timely manner.
In the case of “airport malaria,” the problem is even more serious: the person has no history of travel to tropical countries, so a doctor may not suspect malaria right away. This increases the risk of delays in diagnosis and treatment. Without timely treatment, the infection can quickly progress to a severe condition involving damage to the brain and other organs, potentially leading to death. That is why a rapid diagnosis is critical.
A rare occurrence in Europe
Malaria is not a common local infection in modern Germany. Most cases in the country involve people who were infected abroad. “Airport malaria” is much less common. The previous similar case in Frankfurt was recorded in 2023.
The current case has attracted attention precisely because several people working at the same international transportation hub fell ill at the same time. The first four cases were detected back in July, and the total number of infected individuals has now risen to six.
After the cases were detected, mosquito traps were set up at the airport. The captured insects are sent to a laboratory to determine their species and possible origin. Employees have also been urged to seek medical attention if they develop symptoms and to be sure to mention that they work at Frankfurt Airport.
Can malaria spread beyond the airport?
Currently, there is no evidence of widespread malaria transmission among the population of Frankfurt. It is important to note that malaria is not transmitted from person to person through casual contact—infection requires a specific mosquito vector.
Theoretically, a problem could arise if an infected mosquito survives after arrival, reproduces, or infects local mosquitoes, which would then transmit the parasite to other people. This is precisely why cases of “airport malaria” are considered a potential risk for local transmission of the disease.
