In New Zealand, a Qantas flight to Sydney was diverted to Christchurch over a possible engine issue

Qantas passenger flight QF122 from Queenstown in New Zealand to Sydney was diverted to Christchurch after takeoff due to a possible engine issue. The airline said the aircraft landed safely in Christchurch.

Eyewitness video

According to ABC News, video filmed shortly after takeoff allegedly shows flames coming from the aircraft's left engine. Eyewitness Liam Aspinall said he noticed the flames as the aircraft approached from a distance. According to him, the sound was loud and resembled gunshots.

The Boeing aircraft departed from the ski resort town of Queenstown shortly before 15:30. It was scheduled to arrive at Sydney's Kingsford Smith Airport at 16:50, but was granted priority landing clearance in Christchurch.

Assistance for passengers

Qantas said both engines were operating throughout the flight: there was no engine shutdown or failure. The airline noted that its pilots are trained to handle such situations. Passengers were offered accommodation and assistance in finding alternative flights, as the incident may have been stressful for them.
