Man sentenced to 10 years in Pakistan for rape — Dawn

A court in Karachi, Pakistan, sentenced Asad Anwar to 10 years in prison in a case involving the rape of a woman at a guesthouse in the Clifton area in 2025. As Dawn reports, Additional District and Sessions Judge South Abdul Zahoor Chandio also imposed a fine of 200,000 Pakistani rupees on the convict.

The court ordered that this amount be paid to the victim as compensation. The case was registered at the Boat Basin police station under Article 376 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which concerns rape.

Case circumstances

According to state prosecutor Irfana Qadri, Anwar worked for a marketing company and trained new employees. The victim was a new employee of the company, and the convict was assigned to train her along with other new employees.

The prosecution stated that after four to five days of training, the woman told Anwar of her intention to resign. He then offered to meet her at a guesthouse, where, according to the prosecution, he committed sexual violence.

Evidence and the defense's position

The prosecutor said that CCTV footage from the guesthouse and room booking records confirmed the accused's presence at the relevant place and time. The court also stated that the DNA examination report corroborated the victim's testimony.

The defense denied the accusations and stressed that the woman filed her complaint with a delay. The court noted that a delay in reporting a sexual crime is not an automatic ground for dismissing a case, as the victim or her family may need time to report the incident.
