Pakistan calls for disclosure of government agreements with Google — Dawn
In Pakistan, the media organization Freedom Network sent an open letter to Google and the country’s government with questions about guarantees for the protection of personal data under their recent partnership. As Dawn reports, the organization expressed concern that the cooperation could create opportunities for surveillance, censorship, or unrestricted government access to users’ personal information.
Demand to disclose the agreements
Freedom Network welcomed the signing of memorandums and agreements between Google and the Pakistani government after the company opened an office in the country. At the same time, the organization noted that the parties had not disclosed the details of these arrangements.
In its letter, Freedom Network asks what exactly Google and the government agreed on, whether all memorandums, contracts, and other documents will be published, and who, and on what legal basis, will decide on the confidentiality of specific provisions. The organization also wants to find out whether there are undisclosed commitments regarding access to user data, content, metadata, or government databases.

Journalists’ data and independent audit
The media organization raised the issue of the conditions under which Pakistani authorities will be able to request information about Google users. Freedom Network asked whether such requests will require due process and judicial oversight, and whether the company will reject overly broad or vague demands incompatible with fundamental rights.
Separately, the organization asks for clarification on whether the agreements contain clear safeguards against state access to Gmail, Google Drive, photos, YouTube accounts, search data, and other information belonging to journalists that could reveal confidential sources. Freedom Network also urged Google not to remove materials solely at the request of government agencies, but to consider blocking or removal requests under transparent legal standards and, where possible under the law, notify users and give them an opportunity to appeal the decision.
Another question concerns where Pakistani users’ data is stored — in Pakistan, abroad, or in both locations. Freedom Network stated that there should be no informal or undocumented data-sharing mechanisms between Google and the government, and asked who would independently verify the company’s compliance with privacy and human rights safeguards.
