Pakistan launches fuel subsidies for motorcycles, rickshaws and small cars
Pakistan is set to launch a nationwide fuel subsidy program for owners of motorcycles, rickshaws and cars with engine capacities of up to 800 cubic centimeters on the night of September 17. The use of fuel tokens will begin at 11:59 p.m. on September 16, Dawn reports, citing the deputy prime minister’s office.
Program terms
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the program on Sunday amid rising fuel prices. Owners of two- and three-wheeled vehicles will receive a subsidy of 100 Pakistani rupees per liter within a monthly quota of 20 liters.
Owners of cars with engines of up to 800 cubic centimeters will receive the same subsidy, but within a quota of 30 liters per month. According to the deputy prime minister’s office, the program had already operated in Islamabad, while nationwide registration is open via SMS to 9771.
Payment arrangements
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held a meeting on Tuesday on administrative preparations for the program’s launch. He stressed that the registration procedure must be simple and accessible for its target beneficiaries.

Dar also instructed officials to ensure public awareness and the uninterrupted implementation of the program at petrol stations. He called on elected representatives to spread information about the program and assist with registration, and also ordered volunteers from the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme to be involved in this work.
At a separate meeting of the National Steering Committee on fuel subsidies, Dar instructed that settlements with petrol stations be made through the State Bank of Pakistan within 24 hours. Provinces were also ordered to complete awareness work at the district level.
According to the publication, fuel prices in the country have risen over the past two months due to disruptions on key oil supply routes in the Middle East. Following the latest price revision, a liter of petrol costs 380.24 rupees, while a liter of diesel costs 409.42 rupees.
