Punjab housing program in Pakistan to receive UN-Habitat award
In Pakistan’s Punjab province, the government housing program Apni Chhat Apna Ghar has been selected to receive the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award 2026. As Dawn reports, the award was granted to the Punjab Housing and Town Planning Agency (PHATA), which implements the program.

The Punjab government was invited to receive the award on October 5 in Muscat, Oman, during the global observance of World Habitat Day. The notification was signed on September 14 by UN Deputy Secretary-General and UN-Habitat Executive Director Anacláudia Marinheiro Centeno Rossbach.
The letter states that the selection was made through a rigorous competitive process based on established criteria among nominations from around the world. UN-Habitat decided to recognize PHATA and its program for their significant contribution to expanding access for low-income households to adequate, safe and affordable housing.

Program indicators
The Apni Chhat Apna Ghar program was launched in August 2024. According to official data as of September 10, 2026, 200,072 applicants in the province had received interest-free loans totaling 259.68 billion Pakistani rupees under the program.
After the ceremony, from October 6 to 8, the city of Muscat will host a series of thematic seminars for the exchange of knowledge and experience. UN-Habitat said it would cover the award recipient’s economy-class airfare, accommodation and daily expenses, as well as provide logistical support.
