Inspections of banned fishing nets intensified in Pakistan’s Gwadar — Dawn

In the Pakistani port city of Gwadar, the fisheries department has intensified inspections of fishermen using illegal or banned nets. A monitoring team inspected boats at Padi Zar Beach and checked the mesh size of the nets used by fishermen.

The inspections were conducted on the instructions of Director of Marine Fisheries Ahmed Nadeem and under the supervision of Shah Fahad, assistant director of the fisheries department in Gwadar. Members of the monitoring team instructed fishermen to refrain from using banned nets.

As Dawn reports, the mesh size of some nets is only about 10 millimeters. As a result, even juvenile fish can get caught in them.

Threat to fish stocks

According to the publication’s sources, in recent years some local fishermen have increasingly used harmful fishing gear. These include plastic nets made of thin material, small-mesh nets, nets that surround fish, and wire nets known locally as gujja.

Such practices pose a serious threat to marine biodiversity and contribute to the depletion of fish stocks, the publication notes.
