In South Africa, according to the latest nationwide femicide study, seven women are killed every day, and nearly 60% of them die at the hands of intimate partners. These figures are cited by a Daily Maverick columnist writing about the public response to violence against women.

The author also notes that South Africa’s murder rate is approximately six to seven times higher than the global average. At the same time, nine out of ten murder victims in the country are men.

The bodies of nine women in Ekurhuleni

During a broadcast on POWER 98.7 radio, the author discussed nine women whose bodies have been found in Ekurhuleni since July. According to him, male listeners called the studio and said that they had grown up without a father, but believed they were fine and were not part of the violence problem.

The columnist emphasizes that the personal experience of individual people does not negate statistical data. After two women were charged in connection with one of the deaths in Ekurhuleni, this circumstance was, in his observation, used as an argument that women can also kill. The author contrasts this with the findings of the nationwide study.

Detention after threats in a restaurant

Daily Maverick also mentions a businessman who was filmed in a restaurant in Sandton. In the recording, according to the publication, he can be heard telling women who refused to give him their phone numbers that he could shoot one of them and leave. The man was detained within a few days, after which he apologized and said that he should have walked away from the situation.

The author calls on men to assess not only their own perception of themselves, but also specific behavior: participation in raising children, reactions to friends’ sexist remarks, attitudes toward women’s accounts of fear, and the ability to explain to sons how to manage anger.
