Investigation into Perth City Council launched — ABC News Australia
In Australia, Western Australia Local Government Inspector Tony Brown has launched a three-month investigation into the activities of the City of Perth Council. It was initiated following a report by monitor Carol Adams, who observed the council’s work for nearly five months, ABC News Australia reports.
The investigation may allow Brown to recommend that Local Government Minister Hannah Beazley suspend or dismiss individual council members or the entire council. Earlier, the inspector had already formally required the council to improve its performance.
Possible personnel decisions
Hannah Beazley said she was disappointed by the situation in the city council. Perth Lord Mayor Bruce Reynolds welcomed the start of the review, noting that it would provide an opportunity to independently examine the issues at hand.

Brown also said he was ready to cooperate with the city council and indicated his intention to appoint a monitor to it.
Previous problems at the council
The City of Perth Council has previously experienced scandals and management crises. In 2018, the council faced a full suspension, followed by a two-year investigation costing 7.2 million Australian dollars. It concluded that personal interests, complacency, and a lack of accountability and transparency prevailed within the council.
A leaked report pointed to alarming parallels between the current situation and the 2018 crisis. According to the document’s assessment, relations between the council and the administrative apparatus are in crisis. At the same time, Western Australian Local Government Association President Mark Irwin said that there is still no evidence of dysfunction in the City of Perth Council.
