In Anseong, a truck ran over volunteers, mother and son killed — Korea Herald

In the city of Anseong in South Korea, a small truck ran over people preparing for a flea market in a local park. Two volunteers were killed — a woman aged 40 to 49 and her son, a middle school student. Five other people were injured, Korea Herald reports.

Crash during preparations for the fair

The accident occurred at around 11:18 a.m. Among those injured was a woman aged 20 to 29 who suffered fractures to both legs. The truck ran over people in an area of the park that vehicles normally do not have access to.

Investigators determine the cause of the crash

Police are questioning the driver and witnesses, as well as reviewing surveillance camera footage, to establish the circumstances of the accident. According to investigators’ preliminary assessment, the driver, aged 60 to 69, lost control of the truck while entering the park.

The driver initially said that he confused the accelerator and brake pedals. He later changed his testimony and reported sudden acceleration, which he described as unintentional. Law enforcement officers must also determine whether the event organizers — Anseong city authorities and the Civil Committee for Sustainable Development — ensured appropriate safety measures.
