South Korea’s number of employed people rose by 184,000 in August — Korea Herald

In South Korea, the number of employed people rose by 184,000 in August compared with the same month of the previous year, reaching 29.15 million people. This was the largest increase in five months, Korea Herald reports, citing data from the country’s Ministry of Data and Statistics.

Three months of growth

In August of the previous year, the country had 28.96 million employed people. The number of employed people has been rising for the third consecutive month.

Employment growth resumed in June after a decline of 40,000 people in May. The May decrease was the first decline in 17 months.

The number of employed people increased although the country’s manufacturing sector, according to the source, remains weak.

Unemployment and youth employment

South Korea’s unemployment rate in August stood at 2% and remained unchanged compared with the same month of 2025. The number of unemployed people fell by 4,000 to 588,000.

At the same time, the employment rate among people aged 15 to 29 declined by 1 percentage point year-on-year to 44.1%.
